자식을 위한 바램

약할 때 자기 자신을분별할 수 있는 강한 힘과무서울 때 자신을 잃지 않을 담대성을 가지고정직한 패배에 부끄러워하지 않고 태연하며승리에 겸손하고 온유한 아들과 딸을 나에게주시옵소서.

실행의 탑을 쌓지 않고 공상만 하는 자 되지말게 하시고바라옵건대 그를 쉬움과 안락의 길로인도하지 마시고곤란과 도전에 대하여 분투 항거할 줄 알도록 인도하여 주소서그리하여 폭풍 속에서 용감히 싸울 줄 알고패자를 불쌍히 여길 줄 알도록 가르쳐 주시옵소서.

남을 다스리려고 하기 전에먼저 자기 자신을 다스리게 하시며미래를 바라보는 동시에 과거를 잊지 않는지혜를 주시옵소서.

이것을 다 주신 다음, 이에 더하여 유머를 알게 하시어, 인생을 엄숙히 살아가면서도삶을 즐길 줄 알게 하시고자기 자신을 너무 드러내지 않고겸손한 마음을 갖게 하소서. 그리하여 참으로 위대한 것은소박한 데에 있다는 것과참된 힘은 온유함에 있다는 것을항상 명심토록 하소서.

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak; and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be pround and unbending in honest defeat and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee -- and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
